The Basie Awards

The Count Basie Center for the Arts’ annual Basie Awards is a program modeled after Broadway’s Tony™ Awards, honoring excellence in high school theater in Monmouth County. Each year, evaluators are sent to review dramatic and musical productions, nominations are made, and the culminating awards ceremony is a not-to-be-missed evening of celebration honoring those who share a passion for and an understanding of the power of theater and the arts.

Every year, the Basie’s Education department forms an evaluation committee of theater lovers, performers and educators, who then attend and score upwards to 50 local productions. Buzz for the Basies kicks off in early May, with the announcement of nominees in 25 categories recognizing excellence in everything from acting and directing to set and costume design, choreography, lighting and orchestra. Several weeks later, a capacity crowd packs our historic theater to watch selections from area performances and cheer the nominees and winners.
