COUNT BASIE CENTER FOR THE ARTS BELIEVES
We believe participation in the arts
- is essential to a well-rounded education and motivates lifelong learning
- fosters creativity, self-esteem, teamwork, and problem solving skills
- develops a strong work ethic and the ability to focus
- advances community connections and promotes inclusivity and diversity
- inspires empathy, compassion and tolerance
- enriches life and generates joy
WHO
- Through its education programs the Basie impacts over 20,000 people annually from all over the state
WHAT
- The Basie offers programs for children and adults, students, and teachers. Programs are offered in all the areas of performing arts (music, dance, theatre, film/tv, visual art) through classes, workshops, professional development and more.
WHERE
- Programs take place in schools, community organizations, out in the community itself, and/or on site at Basie Center campuses.
WHY
- Students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate—five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers.
- Students who take four years of arts and music classes score an average of over 150 points higher on the SAT than students who take only one-half year or less.
- Low-income students who are highly engaged in the arts are twice as likely to graduate college as their peers with no arts education.
- Two-thirds of public-school teachers believed that the fine arts are among subjects getting crowded out of the school day by a focus on math and English.
- Black and Hispanic students lack access to quality arts education compared to their White peers, earning an average of 30 and 25 percent fewer arts credits, respectively.

- The Basie offers financial support and merit-based scholarships, and increased these over 100% in the past year

- The Basie is committed to increasing accessibility to the arts for all through scholarships, whole family/student support, workforce development and more
- The Forever for Everyone Endowment aims to raise $20 million dollars, allowing the organization to offer scholarships in perpetuity to Basie Center Academy programs; to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the performing arts; fund the Basie Center’s goals for strategic growth; and create an emergency fund for upkeep of its campus, including its 96-year-old historic theater.
