
The class will enable students to hone their skills in the language of jazz. The beginning course will introduce concepts of jazz melody and harmony and the introductory basics of jazz improvisation. The more advanced class will dive deep into Jazz performance training. Topics covered will include ii-V-I vocabulary, common scale patterns, advanced scales, and Jazz History. Students will leave with an understanding of what (and how) to practice to become a fluent improviser.
Placement will be determined by audition and evaluation. Requirements: Students ages 13-19 should have 3-4 years of experience playing and have know at least 3-4 major scales, know how to read music, and understand rhythm.
This program will conclude with a student showcase on June 19th.
Jazz Arts Academy is presented by the Jazz Arts Project a partnership program with the Count Basie Center for the Arts.
