This class will enable students to hone their skills in the language of jazz. The beginning course will introduce concepts of jazz melody and harmony and the introductory basics of jazz improvisation. The more advanced class will dive deep into Jazz performance training. Topics covered will include ii-V-I vocabulary, common scale patterns, advanced scales, and Jazz History. Students will leave with an understanding of what (and how) to practice to become a fluent improviser.
Placement will be determined by audition and evaluation.
Requirements: Students ages 13 and over should have been playing their instrument for 3 or 4 years and have a knowledge of at least 3 or 4 major scales and be able to read music notes and rhythms.
This course will include 6 group virtual classes of music theory and performance issues with listening and written assignments. In addition each student will receive 4 private, virtual lessons from a professional musician/educator on your individual instrument.
Classes held Sundays: January 24, 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28
A one time $10 family registration fee will be added per season.
